Geological Field Techniques

Dr Tom W Argles, Dr David A Rothery, Professor Robert A Spicer, and Dr Angela L. Coe, "Geological Field Techniques"
Wi-y-Black-well | 2010 | ISBN: 1444330624 | 336 pages | PDF | 31,9 MB

The understanding of Earth processes and environments over geological time is highly dependent upon both the experience that can only be gained through doing fieldwork, and the collection of reliable data and appropriate samples in the field. This textbook explains the main data gathering techniques used by geologists in the field and the reasons for these, with emphasis throughout on how to make effective field observations and record these in suitable formats. Equal weight is given to assembling field observations from igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rock types. There are also substantial chapters on producing a field notebook, collecting structural information, recording fossil data and constructing geological maps.

Geological Field Techniques is designed for students, amateur enthusiasts and professionals who have a background in geology and wish to collect field data on rocks and geological features. Teaching aspects of this textbook include:
step-by-step guides to essential practical skills such as using a compass-clinometer, making a geological map and drawing a field sketch;
tricks of the trade, checklists, flow charts and short worked examples;
over 200 illustrations of a wide range of field notes, maps and geological features;
appendices with the commonly used rock description and classification diagrams;
a supporting website hosted by Wiley Blackwell.

Earth Structure: An Introduction to Structural Geology and Tectonics

Ben A. van der Pluijm, Stephen Marshak, "Earth Structure: An Introduction to Structural Geology and Tectonics"
W. W. Norton & Company | ISBN: 039392467X | December 29, 2003 | PDF | 672 pages | 43 Mb

For the Second Edition of Earth Structure: An Introduction to Structural Geology and Tectonics, the authors have heavily revised each chapter while preserving the overall structure of the First Edition. The Second Edition also benefits from new artwork that clearly illustrates complex concepts.

New to the Second Edition:

* New Chapter 15, "Geophysical Imaging," by Frederick Cook
* Within Chapters 21 and 22, four new essays on "Regional Perspectives" discuss the European Alps, the Altaids, the Appalachians, and the Cascadia Wedge.
* New and updated art for more informative illustration of concepts. The Second Edition now has 570 black & white figures.

Fuzzy Logic in Geology

"Fuzzy Logic in Geology" Ed. by Robert V. Demicco, George J. Klir
Elsevier Academic Press | 2004 | ISBN: 0124151469 | 366 pages | PDF | 5 Mb

Fuzzy Logic in Geology is a true role model. It is a high quality work which opens the door to application of new methods and new viewpoints to a variety of basic problems in geology, geophysics, and related fields. It is well-organized and reader-friendly.

This book has three purposes. Its first purpose is to demonstrate that fuzzy logic opens a radically new way to represent geological knowledge and to deal with geological problems, and that this new approach has been surprisingly successful in many areas of geology. The second purpose is to help geologists understand the main facets of fuzzy logic and the role of these facets in geology. The final purpose of this book is to make researchers in fuzzy logic aware of the emerging opportunities for the application of their expertise in geology.

There is an enormous literature on perceptions, spanning psychology, philosophy, linguistics, and other fields. But what has not been in existence is a theory in which perceptions can be operated on as objects of computation.

Fuzzy logic provides a basis for such a theory—a theory which is referred to as the computational theory of perceptions (CTP).
In the computational theory of perceptions, perceptions are dealt with not as patterns of brain activity, but through their descriptions in a natural language. In this sense, a natural language may be viewed as a system for describing perceptions. Thus, if classical, bivalent logic is viewed as the logic of measurements, then fuzzy logic may be viewed as the logic of perceptions.
Although the methodology of computing with words and perceptions is not treated explicitly in the book, the basic ideas which underlie it are in evidence throughout.
Furthermore, Fuzzy Logic in Geology ventures beyond well-established techniques and presents authoritative expositions of methods which lie on the frontiers of fuzzy logic.

Rocks and Minerals (The Restless Earth) By Selby Cull

Publisher: Chelsea House Publications 2009-05 | 112 Pages | ISBN: 0791097021 | PDF | 8 MB

Every rock you see tells a story about the Earth. Glassy black rocks mark moments when the Earth's liquid insides spilled out onto its surface. Gritty, sandy rocks are the dead skin of the Earth, shed after years of wind and rain. Twisted, sparkly rocks formed deep in the bellies of mountains. In "Rocks and Minerals", young readers will learn how to read the 'story' of a rock by examining its mineral makeup and how to identify minerals by their color, shape, shine, special powers, and even taste. Students can then use their knowledge of rocks and minerals to understand how the Earth works.

Basic Geological Mapping

  • Basic Geological Mapping, Fourth edition John Barnes
  • The Field Description of Metamorphic Rocks Norman Fry
  • The Mapping of Geological Structures Ken McClay
  • Field Geophysics, Third edition John Milsom
  • The Field Description of Igneous Rocks Richard Thorpe & Geoff Brown
